3 cited for riding in closed area

SANDPOINT - Three snowmobile riders were cited March 22 for entering an area closed to snowmobile use just northwest of Priest Lake, according to the Idaho Panhandle National Forest Service.

The area is off limits to snowmobile riders due to a 2007 Federal Court ruling that restricts motorized winter travel within portions of land designated for woodland caribou recovery.

The violations are considered misdemeanors and are punishable by a maximum fine of $5,000 and six months in jail.

The three riders can choose to pay a $125 fine or can request a court date before a Federal Magistrate in Coeur d'Alene.

Three caribou have been spotted in the area during the last month, and the U.S. Forest Service said it will continue to monitor snowmobile use throughout the region to protect the animal.
