Sandpoint duo claim third in tennis tourney
SPOKANE — Sandpoint’s Piper Wahlin and Ryan Williams faced their stiffest test of the season in mixed doubles, rising to the occasion and finishing third out of 28 teams in No. 1 mixed doubles last weekend at the Inland Empire tennis tournament in Spokane.
The tournament drew teams from Washington, Idaho and Montana, and marked the first time all season the doubles team has been tested, and they passed with flying colors, winning four matches and dropping only one — a semi-final loss to Hanford.
“They played really well together and stepped it up a notch,” said head coach Jane Rockwell. “It was a good warm up for them for state.”
Nik Thorell and Cameron Hay won one and lost two at No. 2 boys doubles, and Rockwell said it was the best they’ve played all season, hands down.
Justin Vaughn and Mikka Nostdahl won a match at No. 1 boys doubles, Dash Kamp and Justine Clawson won a match at No. 2 mixed doubles, and Dustin Pierce won a match at No. 2 boys singles to round out the Bulldog wins over the weekend.
