COEUR d’ALENE — Dan Sommerfield and Colton Story carded a 74 and 76, respectively, to lead the Sandpoint boys at the Lake City Invitational Monday at the Coeur d’Alene Public golf course.

The two 6-foot-4 long hitters continue to drop strokes as they gain course time, giving the Bulldogs a little momentum as the all-important district meet approaches on Wednesday.

“They seem really focused right now,” said Sandpoint coach Mike Keough of his two aces. “They know the next round is for districts.”

The 4A Region 1 tournament is Wednesday at StoneRidge. The winning teams and top three individuals qualify for state, as does any other boys team that shoots 315 or better, or a girls team that shoots 380 or better. Eli Brent (91), Chris Rhyne (84) and Bryan Keough (93) comprise the rest of the team that will compete on Wednesday.

“They feel confident because they’re going on a course they’re familiar with,” said Keough of Stoneridge, noting they’ll be in a dog fight with Moscow for the team berth. “They have two strong golfers just like us. It will come down to the three-four-five spots.”

Sandy Whalen had her best round of the season, carding a 98 to lead the Sandpoint girls team. Her score was 10 strokes lower than her teammates, all of whom have shown the ability to break 100 on any given round.

The boys tee off at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, and the girls around 12:30 p.m.

? Wampus Cat golfers wrap up shortened season

PINEHURST — Megan Hess shot a 116 to lead the Clark Fork girls team at the 2A District 1 golf tournament Monday afternoon at Pinehurst Golf Course. Unfortunately, Hess missed qualifying for an individual state berth — her goal all season — by only two strokes.

“She wasn’t too happy with it,” said Cats coach K.C. MacDonald, adding there was added pressure because of the lack of course time this year.

All told, Clark Fork only got to play actual golf in the four meets this year. They were limited to practicing on school grounds for the entire year, making the short game nearly impossible to simulate.

“We never really got a chance,” said MacDonald, noting that his team wasn’t the only one struggling for course time during a difficult season. “All the scores were higher than usual.”

Brian Baugh shot a 105 to lead the boys team, followed closely by Drew Wilkinson with a 106, ending the Cats’ season.
