Pfeifer seeking to help students, improve school facilities

| May 13, 2008 9:00 PM

1. Why are you running for the school board?

I want to continue to work for the students and patrons in my community. I enjoy the position.

2. How would your background benefit you if you are elected to the school board?

I have been on the school board for six years. For the last five years, I have been chairman. I have received training in many aspects of school governance and have spent time researching and understanding current educational issues.

3. What would you like to accomplish as a school board member?

n Continued improvement in student achievement

n Safe, healthy, and improved facilities

n Management of resources in the most effective and efficient manner

4. Are you for or against the May 20 plant facilities election? Why or why not?

I am “for” the plant facilities levy. It addresses health and safety needs in all of our schools and overcrowding at our elementary schools. The state of Idaho provides no funding for school construction. It has been about 20 years since the community has supported a plant facility levy.

5. Do you support state and community funding for public education? Why or why not?

Yes. Public education could not exist without state and community funding. I do believe that school districts need to be accountable for the money that they receive.

6. What is the biggest challenge facing the school district?

Meeting the mandates of the No Child Left Behind legislation and still maintaining a well-rounded education for our students.

7. How have you been involved in school prior to your decision to run for the school board?

In addition to the time I spend on the school board, I have been a parent volunteer in schools for 12 years, a board member for the Panhandle Alliance for Education, and involved in my children’s numerous school activities.

8. Why are you the best candidate?

I have proven leadership, dedication, and experience on the school board. I am never satisfied with the status quo and will continue to work to improve our school district and community.

9. What is the Lake Pend Oreille School District doing right?

Educating our children. We have a tremendous leader in Superintendent Dick Cvitanich, dedicated teachers, principals and staff, hardworking students, and a board that is focused on providing the best education possible.

10. What is the Lake Pend Oreille School District doing wrong? How would you fix it?

Nothing, but we should still seek to improve in all areas.

11. What question do you think all candidates should be asked? What is your answer?

Are you willing to put the time and energy into this position to make a positive difference in our educational system? Yes. I have dedicated many hours every week to this position. The district is in a much better place, both educationally and financially, than it was six years ago.
