Roos is only candidate with experience for job

| May 21, 2008 9:00 PM

The expiration of law enforcement certificates occurs three years after one has left law enforcement. They are lapsed pending renewal.

To renew them, one takes a quick refresher course from POST, tests and receives current status on all certificates. Nobody 'unlearns' any of the training levels, certifications, experience or track record that they have. The renewal process is routine.

The job description for sheriff involves the administration of all divisions, from patrol to detectives, jail, civil, records, marine, etc.

One candidate apparently only has his basic certification, two have supervisor's level certificates, and two have executive level, and one of those has a long history of successful projects in Bonner County, including building a new jail, implementing domestic violence advocates, starting a juvenile facility, inmate labor program and much more.

Being a police officer does not constitute being a law enforcement administrator. A planner and budgeter with experience in every facet of the operation is what we need. I know that person is Chip Roos.
