Savage will work to find solutions to problems

| May 21, 2008 9:00 PM

I am supporting Elaine Savage in her bid for re-election for more than one reason. The most important is that I have found her to be honest and approachable about problems that exist in the sheriff's department and in the jail. Also, Elaine Savage understands that public safety is complex, involving more than arresting people. Many crimes could be prevented by more effective ways of dealing with substance abuse, including education and treatment. Finally, as a mental health professional in the community I appreciate her openness to the need to improve the procedures for dealing with the many individuals with mental illness that come in contact with law enforcement and/or end up in jail. I have found her responsive to the needs of individuals as well as to the need for changes in the system.

Bonner County has had too many years of leadership in the sheriff's department that has denied that any problems exist! It is not possible to make things better by pretending that nothing is wrong! Sheriff Savage has been a certified law enforcement officer since 1986, in Texas, and since 1999 in Idaho. She will take time to listen to citizen's concerns, honestly own up to problems and work to bring about solutions. That is why she has my support.
