Five Bulldogs land 4A All-IEL baseball honors

| May 27, 2008 9:00 PM

Five Sandpoint Bulldogs were named to the 4A portion of the All-IEL baseball team, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Cory Hawkins (SS), Jake Semones (OF), Ben Fisher (P), Cole Tonnemacher (1B) and Woody Hawkins (Utility) were named to the team. No Sandpoint players were named to the combined (4A/5A) IEL first or second teams.

Hawkins hit .480, with four home runs and eight doubles on the season, providing the Bulldogs with a presence in the middle of the order. Semones hit .330, with five doubles and eight stolen bases, giving the Bulldogs a potent leadoff hitter.

Head coach Doug Semones offered an assessment of each player.

? Cory Hawkins — “Threat every time he came to the plate. He hit four bombs, people were aware of him.”

? Jake Somones — “.500 on base percentage as a leadoff hitter. He scored the most runs; kind of our catalyst.”

? Ben Fisher — “Threw two of the best games all year; a no-hitter against Coeur d’Alene and a two-hitter against Moscow. He throws strikes with good control.”

? Cole Tonnemacher — “Missed part of the season, but when he was there he was a dangerous hitter. He was swinging a hot bat at the end.”

? Woody Hawkins — “Could play several positions and pitched. Just a valuable player, who hit over .300.”

Lewiston swept the individual awards as the all-Inland Empire League baseball team was selected by the league’s coaches. Senior pitcher Brett Watson, who led the Bengals to the IEL and 5A Region 1 titles, was named MVP. Sophomore pitcher/first baseman Justin Podrabsky was named Newcomer of the Year, and Tom Grunenfelder was tabbed Coach of the Year.
