Watching new voters was wonderful privilege
For the first time, after 24 years of overseeing city elections, on Nov. 4 I was privileged to work as an election clerk at the Community Hall.
I'm sure the efficient and dedicated crew of judge Sally Transue and clerks Sue Austin, Shirley Parker, Linda Hunt, Rose Chaney, Clarice Parsons, Grace Brixen and Julie Meyer was mirrored throughout Bonner County and across the country. It was heartwarming to hear voter after voter express their thanks to the election workers for their efforts on this day.
Every election worker must have shared the same feelings I had — an exorbitant pride in the democratic system we enjoy in this country. It was thrilling to watch young and old flow through the door to cast their ballots and be a part of the process. It was a day full of smiles as people were so happy to be exercising this wonderful privilege. Many brought their small children — future voters — to be part of the day.
My work was to handle same-day registrations. The best moments in my day were registering young first-time voters — especially the young man who had turned 18 on Nov. 3! What a great way to celebrate his coming of age.
