Top Dog Wrestling kicks off season

| November 14, 2008 8:00 PM

Top Dog Wrestling kicked off the 2008 season with outstanding performances in both Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint. The future Bulldog wrestlers amassed more than 30 medals between the two tournaments.

While competing in Bonners Ferry, the Top Dogs collected eighteen medals, including Gage Sigman, Scout Nash and Hyrum Hunsaker, who combined for nine wins against zero losses. Also advancing to the finals for the Top Dogs were Damion Malthorpe and Mahonri Hunsaker.

Last Saturday, more than 350 wrestlers competed at the Top Dog Tournament held at Sandpoint Middle School. The Top Dogs crowned six champions. Leading the charge for the Top Dogs was Gage Sigman, who avenged one of the few losses of his career with a first round pin over his opponent from Real Life. Casey Randles spent just over 30 seconds on the mat, making quick work of his opponents on his way to a title. Other highlights included Tanner Kohal's first place finish as Kohal avenged his lone loss from last week. Also capturing first place medals for the Top Dogs were Mason Bangeman, Scout Nash, and Hyrum Hunsaker.

The Top Dog medal count does not include the program's youngest group of wrestlers, the Pre Bantams. Despite posting several wins, this group competes in a round-robin format, receiving red and blue ribbons for each performance.
