Just say no to more property tax levies

| November 17, 2008 8:00 PM

We have a deep and forecasted long recession; global financial crisis not seen since Great Depression. Government bailouts, economic stimulus packages. Rising unemployment, tight credit, small business closures, corporate failures, increasing home foreclosures, falling consumer confidence, individuals cutting back. State, local governments trimming/cutting budgets. President-elect promising tax cuts.

Not LPOSD. Despite very tough times ahead planning another supplemental levy in February '09 following last fall's $14 million facilities levy passing by only 42 votes. LPOSD ignores reality.

Recent tax bills show more taxes to LPOSD than any other entity. LPOSD 27 percent of property taxes despite a one-cent sales tax increase funding schools. Heading back to 43 percent.

How many who bought into LPOSD propaganda for facilities levy now wish they hadn't, and worse yet how many too busy or too lazy to vote against it wish they had?

Stop LPOSD sucking us dry with property tax after property tax. Just say no. Force LPOSD to operate with current funds just like individuals must. If it's hard to get out to vote get an absentee ballot from LPOSD within 30 days prior to levy election.

How about a four-day school week. Boundary County School District has had this successfully for several years. My understanding is that it reduced operational costs, majority of taxpayers favor it, kids love it.

LPOSD continuous taxing needs to be stopped now with a solid no vote on future levies starting with February '09.
