Mullan defeats Clark Fork

| October 2, 2008 9:00 PM

CLARK FORK - Freshman quarterback Casey McKinnon was a one-man wrecking crew, throwing for three scores and running for another in the first half to propel Mullan to a 32-14 win over Clark Fork in homecoming football action Thursday night in Clark Fork.

Josh Trogden returned the opening kickoff down to the two yard line, giving Mullan (2-3, 2-3 NSL) an early lead that they would build on. McKinnon found three different Tiger receivers for first half scores.

Clark Fork (0-5, 0-5 NSL) got some excellent defensive line play, led by Chase Chowning, Cody Bowers and Austin Thrasher, who were able to pressure McKinnon much of the game.

The Cats came out with a new look offensively, opening the game in a three back, wing-T formation, with Howard Katzenberg, Chaunce Nesbitt and Nate Nesbitt taking shotgun snaps and keeping the ball on the ground.

Katzenberg had a 25 yard touchdown run, and senior punter David Meadows scored on the final play of the game, taking a handoff and running in for the score. Cats coach Brian Arthun liked how his team kept fighting.

"We came out in the second half and played harder," he said. "We never quit; kept on fighting."

Clark Fork hosts Wallace next Friday.

n Bulldog girls tie Lakeland 1-1

RATHDRUM - Lakeland senior Camille Reynolds pushed her run through the heart of the defense to the 18, then slotted the pass to Keeloni Duffy coming in off the wing for the goal in the 20th minute.

Sandpoint's Ellie Engel got loose in the box on a corner kick from Brittany Clawson for the header to tie it up in the 48th minute and that's how Thursday's nonleague match ended, a 1-1 tie. It was a little bit of this and a little bit of that, Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said.

"We stood up with one of the best teams in the state of Idaho and went toe to toe with them," Maddy said. "To score first was good, but I wanted to see our reaction when they scored. A lot of times with Sandpoint, once they score they kind of take over.

"But we didn't give up anytime. It was a great match."

Sandpoint goalkeeper Kelsey Windju stopped eight balls for the Bulldogs, who outshot the Hawks 18-11. Robyn Tingey turned away 12 for the Hawks.

"We ran a 4-5-1 tonight to try and create a mismatch in the middle of the field," Maddy said. "It gives us different options attacking off the wing and a different look for them to have to defend."

Sandpoint (9-3-3) hosts Lewiston Saturday night at 6 p.m. at War Memorial.
