Spartans dominate in 53-9 win

| October 10, 2008 9:00 PM

PRIEST RIVER— The (4-2, 2-1IML) Spartans held on to the number two spot in the Intermountain League winning their homecoming game against  Kellogg 53-9 Friday night.  Senior runningback Brian Nelson put up video game numbers rushing for 181-yards and four touchdowns on only seven carries for the Spartans.

"The coaches made great calls and the line opened up huge holes," Nelson said modestly after the game.  When asked if he had ever rushed for four touchdowns he replied smiling, "no sir, but it feels pretty good.  It's even better it was homecoming and senior year."

Getting past first half drive-killing penalties Priest River exploded in the second half scoring 39 points, 18 off Nelson touchdowns.  Also having a solid night for the Spartans was senior quarterback Brian Fulp who completed 3 of 7 passes for 78-yards and a touchdown.

"If our kids step up and play like we did tonight, we will beat Orofino," said Priest River Coach Jared Hughes.  Priest River travels to Orofino next Friday, where with a win, the Spartans would end IML play at least tying for the league title.  Kellogg looks to get healthy hosting Bonners Ferry.
