Donate extra produce to community's hungry
We are living in interesting times, but things are becoming increasingly difficult for many in our community. Jobs are scarce, rent has not gone down, and winter is just around the corner. Meanwhile, many folks have a treasure trove of fruit on backyard trees, and carrots and other root crops unharvested in gardens. This is food that could really make a difference for those in our area who have fallen on hard times.
Please take some time to harvest this valuable and nutritious food, bag it up, and take it to the nearest food bank. It will be received with gratitude and will be distributed immediately to those in need. Donations are tax deductible. If you have a neighbor with fruits or vegetables they don't want, ask them if you can harvest them, too. Get the kids involved. It's a great way to teach the younger generation the value of community service. It doesn't take long to pick the fruits or dig up the root crops, and the result is a cleaner yard. Who likes to walk through a carpet of rotten, wasted fruit? Somebody planted those trees, nurtured them, and waited patiently for them to bear. It's a shame to waste not only the fruit, but the efforts of those who planted the trees years ago. Helping others is a good thing to do, and it feels good, too.
