SHS boys set sights on state title

SANDPOINT - It's taken Sandpoint head coach Randy Thoreson a little while to get used to the 2008 boys soccer team's loose nature, a far departure from some of the more serious teams he's coached to state titles in the past.

But make no mistake, that easy-going disposition quickly disappears when the 80 minutes start, quickly replaced by a physical, athletic juggernaut that has been mowing down opponents this season by a decisive 63-5 scoring margin.

It plays perfectly into Thoreson's strategy, which is to make sure his teams stay relaxed and have a good time under the pressure of the state tournament.

"This team performs well when they're joking around," explained Thoreson. "But when they step on the pitch, they're ready."

Sandpoint (15-1) has had a stellar season to date, including a 3-1 win over 5A power Centennial earlier this season, and a 13-0 scoring margin in three wins over 5A rival Coeur d'Alene. They'll open the 4A state tournament today against Hillcrest (11-5), a team Thoreson admits he knows nothing about.

Leading Sandpoint will be a trio of scoring machines in Daniel Anderson, Tanner Williams and Adam Crossingham, who've combined to score 41 goals this season. As crucial as those players are, senior Spencer Swerin, who has tallied six goals and nine assists on the year, might be the most important player. At 6-3, he provides an intimidating and effective presence in dominating the midfield action and setting the attack.

Senior Ben Murray, with five goals and eight assists, will also be a pivotal player in helping control the midfield, which is essential at state.

Tanner French (one of the best players in the state in the air), Jansen Rinck, Mikka Nostdahl and Forrest Andrews comprise the last line of defense, and goalie Shawnn Carlson will look to improve upon his 10 shutouts this year.

"Hopefully we have a great time - win, lose or draw," said Thoreson, adding a caveat with a chuckle. "But we're not going down there to lose or draw."

Sandpoint kicks it off against Hillcrest today at 10 a.m. at Brothers Park in Caldwell.
