Obama working to end violence against women

| October 28, 2008 9:00 PM

One more reason to vote for Obama and Biden this November, Senators Obama and Biden have sponsored and supported legislation, including funding, to reduce violence against women and to assist women survivors of domestic abuse.

This should matter to Idaho women, where domestic abuse is extremely high per capita. Biden authored the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).  Obama cosponsored the reauthorization of VAWA and authored legislation on violence against women as an Illinois State Senator. Biden has been a long time champion for equal rights for women.

The Violence Against Women Act  includes Federal right of action for a woman to go to court against her abuser; provides funding for domestic violence shelters as well as police plus judicial programs to reduce violence against women; establishes national hotline for victims of violence.

On the other hand McCain voted NO on the Violence Against Women Act. I'm not sure why he'd turn his back on this very important issue. During the last debate McCain said Roe v. Wade was a mistake. His running mate Sarah Palin required women in Wasilla to pay for their own medical examinations after being raped. Further she doesn't support a woman's right to choose, even in the case of rape or incest. She has cut funding for teen moms and comprehensive sex education, while promoting failed abstinence-only programs. With McCain and Palin in the White House women's equal rights, for pay, medical care, and the right to choose will all be in very real jeopardy.
