Hewitt leads Bulldog to win

| September 2, 2008 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT - Senior Bailey Hewitt scored both of her team's goals for the second time this year, leading Sandpoint to a 2-1 win over Moscow Tuesday in Inland Empire League action under the lights at War Memorial Field.

Sandpoint (2-0, 1-0) head coach Adam Tajan felt his team had not played up to its potential in the first three halves of the season. After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs came out with some urgency offensively, with Kendall Stratton blasting a shot and Hewitt putting in the rebound just one minute into the second half.

"We came out fired up and hungry to find the back of the net," Tajan said. "We're a good team, with lots of potential, but I hadn't seen that yet this year."

Moscow (1-1, 0-1) would get the equalizer midway through the second half on a goal by Kerry Mohler. Sandpoint created some good looks, out-shooting the Bears 14-7, but couldn't seem to get a clean strike on the ball around the net all game.

With eight minutes left in the 1-1 game, Brittany Clawson bent a corner kick in front of the goal and Bailey Hewitt was hit in the back as she went up for the header and drew the call in the box. She punched the resulting penalty kick low and to the right past a diving Moscow goalie.

MOSCOW - Moscow scored a goal in the 71st minute to break a scoreless tie and propel the Bears over the Bulldogs 1-0 Tuesday in IEL action in Moscow.

Like the two team's matchup last year in districts, the Bulldogs (3-1, 0-1) dominated most of the action but were unable to get the final results on the scoreboard.

"It was even in the first half, and in the second half we dominated the game very badly," said Sandpoint coach Randy Thoreson. "Had lots of looks, hit the bar three times, just couldn't finish the deal."

Although 4A, the Bears and Bulldogs are arguably the top two teams in the IEL, and will see each other at least two more times this season. Dominated by Sandpoint for many years, the two 4A schools have become rivals of late.

Sandpoint out-shot Moscow 11-7, and senior goalie Shawnn Carlson gave up his first goal of the season in four games.

Sandpoint plays 5A Centennial Friday in Lewiston in what figures to be their toughest regular season opponent this season.
