Let the debate begin on area's greatest team

The 2008 presidential election is upon us, and with it the customary political debates - ad nauseam - as each candidate makes a case to the American public in an attempt to garner votes.

In that spirit, and as a sort of reprieve from the political saturation overload, the Daily Bee sports page is holding its own debate - The Great Debate ‘08. The debate topic is simple: Which is the greatest Sandpoint High School sports team of all time?

Heretofore mere barstool conjecture, the question is not as simple as it might seem at first glance.

The SHS gymnasium boasts countless state championship banners, each the embodiment of a group of boys or girls that came together to achieve greatness. But which one is the greatest?

When considering Sandpoint's history, naturally volleyball, soccer and wrestling come to mind, as the Bulldogs have dominated those sports at the state level for years. But baseball, football, girls cross country and boys track have also won a state title. And what of the great teams that maybe didn't win state?

The beauty of a great debate is that there are no wrong answers, merely opinions. Now is the time to state your case.

In 50 words or less - strictly enforced for debate fairness, —simply answer the following question: The (year/gender/sport) is the greatest SHS team of all-time because …

E-mail all responses to "eplummer@cdapress.com" or bring a written copy by the Daily Bee during business hours. All submissions will be printed in future Daily Bee sports pages from now until the Nov. 4 presidential election, at which time all votes will be counted and a winner named.

So let's hear it Sandpoint sports fans, speak now or forever hold your peace.
