Sunnyside yard sale bears witness to great bargains and wildlife

| September 19, 2008 9:00 PM

I wonder how much longer this Indian Summer is going to last? I also wonder how much longer I will be able to write the term Indian Summer without getting sideways with the politically correct crowd?

How about Roman Nose?

I was as shocked as anyone by the recent downturn in the economy. It was good to know that Panhandle State Bank, Mountain West, AmericanWest and our other local banks steered clear of some of the subprime nonsense we are learning about.

We have seen more foreclosures listed in the paper this year than we ever have.

We do have a few businesses closing, I have noticed. Northwest Handmade and Duke’s are closing at the end of this month.

Big 5 and Jack in the Box are opening soon. The best rumor out there is that Costco is coming to Ponderay in the near future.

The new animal shelter on Kootenai Cutoff Road also looks really good. Watch the paper for the announcement of its grand opening.

Stay tuned …

A yard sale on Sunnyside Road had an unexpected visitor last Saturday. Cliffton Christofferson snapped this picture at his friend, Jeremiah’s, home. The year-old bear sauntered into the yard and knocked over a table with books and nik-naks on it.

“People weren’t afraid of the bear and the bear wasn’t afraid of people,” Christofferson said. “One person kept shooting pictures of the bear and the bear kept coming toward him.”

After the bruin made its way through the yard it went up on Jeremiah’s porch, laid down and “crossed its paws like a dog.”

The bear showed up at Christofferson’s home later that day.

“This is the second time I have had a bear near my home this summer,” he said. “The first time was a while back. I left my door open and caught a glimpse of something moving out of the corner of my eye. The bear was walking into my house before I shouted and chased it out.”

If you haven’t attended a high school activity this year, you really should. I believe there is no better entertainment than watching high school sports and these kids deserve our support.

Whether it is a Wampus Cats football game or a Bulldog soccer game, these student athletes give it all they have every time they compete.

Nearly every SHS sports team is primed to take state or at least give it a good try. I haven’t caught a volleyball match yet, but I will.

If you want to know whe the teams are playing, grab a sports poster at the Bee.

If you want to see top-notch soccer, plan on attending the SHS versus Moscow boys’ soccer game next Tuesday at Memorial Field. JVs at 5 p.m. and varsity is 7 p.m. The Moscow Bears , no relation to the above story, beat the Bulldogs in their last outing.

Even of you don’t know the difference between offsides and a hand ball, I guarantee you will recognize and appreciate the speed and power of this team.
