Hewitt leads SHS past Trojans

| September 25, 2008 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT - Bailey Hewitt scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to break open a physical and hotly-contested game, leading Sandpoint past Post Falls 2-0 Thursday afternoon in IEL girls soccer action at Centennial Field.

The first goal came on a gorgeous cross from Brittany Clawson in the 75th minute that Hewitt managed to get her head on right in front of the goal. Four minutes later Hewitt finished another nice cross from Ellie Engel for the insurance goal, giving her 10 on the season.

The game had a scary moment when Sandpoint (8-3-1, 5-0-1 IEL) goalie Kelsey Windju came out aggressively on a ball and was inadvertently kicked in the face by a Post Falls girl who failed to stop on the play. She would leave the game with a bloody nose, and a couple more heated exchanges would ensue between the two teams toward the end of the game.

"Post Falls has been playing us pretty straight up the last few games," said Sandpoint coach Adam Tajan. "I like how we responded late in the game and I liked our aggression fielding balls in the air.

Post Falls (3-9, 2-5 IEL) refused to comment after the game.

Sandpoint hosts Lewis and Clark Saturday at noon at War Memorial Field.
