Children often reflect views of their parents

| April 4, 2009 9:00 PM

Recent letters referring to our newly-elected President, Mr. Obama as a socialist, communist, Hitler, and my personal favorite the anti-Christ have been interesting. It’s informative to know who has these types of ideas. A rational person wouldn’t take these views seriously, so no need to rush to the president’s defense.

Yet, a letter written by an eleven year old more recently changed my mind. We need to let our youth know we do have hope that the new administration, and our new president will be given the opportunity to work this nation out of the sorry mess it’s in. This child’s letter simply asked people to be respectful, having insight that seems to be lost on many adults.

The majority of the country does respect the president; unfortunately there are still pockets of prejudice. Some would rather be saying the N word but know publicly this is ugly. Others are simply showing their preference to have their team win rather than working to solve all our nations issues.

Children will reflect what they are learning at home, raising children with prejudice is as shameful as raising them with alcoholism or domestic violence. Prejudice is what separates us, binds us to hate, and stagnates our progress to becoming a greater civilization. All children deserve a peaceful world. It’s up to all of us to work together and to give the new president a chance at success and more than a few weeks to solve eight years of mistakes.
