Separate groups both working to help pets

There seems to be ongoing confusion about Bonner Humane Society and Panhandle Animal Shelter. We are two separate nonprofit organizations, each having its own board of directors and facilities.

Bonner Humane Society is a low-cost spay, neuter, vaccination and wellness clinic located at 900 Westwood Drive, off of Highway 2 just west of Division Avenue.

We have been in business for more than 20 years at the same location. Our veterinarian, Dr. Eileen Kellner, has 21 years experience and has recently moved here from Virginia to help us with our mission of reducing the population of unwanted pets.

We do not shelter animals or provide adoption services. We do provide many spay and neuter surgeries for the shelter and work with them whenever possible. Our number is (208) 263-9282. Please call for available appointment times and any questions.

Panhandle Animal Shelter, PAS, is a no-kill shelter located on Kootenai Cutoff Road. They have just had a grand opening of their lovely new facility that includes an excellent thrift shop, which provides some of their funding.

They provide care instructions for each animal they place, and every attempt is made to see that people and pets are a good match. Volunteers work with the animals to keep them well socialized. Every pet is spayed or neutered before adoption. The shelter hours are from noon to 5 p.m., seven days a week. The phone number is (208) 265-7297. Stop by to shop or to donate things for the thrift shop, and visit the animals while you are there; you might find a new “best friend.”

Diane Newcomer is the board chairperson of Bonner Humane Society.
