Pitching gem highlights busy day of prep action

| April 7, 2009 9:00 PM

RATHDRUM — Cole Tonnemacher continued his torrid pitching of late, tossing a two-hit shutout to lead Sandpoint to a 9-0 nonleague win over Lakeland on Tuesday, in a game that was moved from War Memorial because of field conditions.

Tonnemacher struck out nine, pounding the strike zone and economically throwing just 52 pitches in the shutout. Head coach Chris Young said the team has really rallied around the left hander after Tonnemacher had a strong showing in Tucson during spring break.

Ben Fisher, Joel Cramer, Jordan Hammack, Daniel Charvoz, and Tonnemacher each tallied two hits to lead an emerging Sandpoint (5-9) offence.

“We came ready to swing the bats and jumped all over them,” said Young, stressing the importance of playing over spring break. “The guys got a lot of field time in Tucson.”

Sandpoint went just 1-4 in the 1st Annual Cherry Field Tournament in Arizona, the win coming when Tonnemacher pitched a gem to lead the Bulldogs to a 7-1 win over Murano High School from Arizona, the No. 1 seed in their pool.

“I was able to move a lot of players around and get a feel for what I want to do the rest of the year,” said Young of the tournament, which included two of the top 10 high school teams in the country. “It showed the boys a different level.”

Sandpoint is at Coeur d’Alene tomorrow in an early season IEL showdown.

n Bulldog girls suffer hard luck loss

RATHDRUM — While he admitted a passed ball on an attempted intentional walk in the last inning is a tough way to lose, Sandpoint coach Derek Dickinson loved the way his team battled in a 4-3 loss at Lakeland Tuesday afternoon.

C.J. Semones had two of Sandpoint’s three hits, and Molly Givens was solid on the mound in the loss, striking out four Hawks hitters. Nicole Adams added an RBI single, but the Bulldogs (0-6-1) left eight runners on base, which proved costly in the tight game.

“If we cash in some of our runs we’re in better shape,” said Dickinson, whose team led 3-0 in the fifth inning before Lakeland tied the game.

Jordan Thomas led off the Lakeland seventh with a triple and scored on a passed ball for the winning run.

“We manufactured the other runs with some bunting and delayed steals,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said.

Imeson won in a grueling third set tie-breaker, which ended at 8-6.

“She would not give up; just wore the other girl down,” said head coach Kent Anderson, who felt a couple of the matches will have different outcomes as his team logs more court time. “First match of the year on one practice and every match was tight.”
