SANDPOINT — The ski season may be over, but that doesn’t mean the action is done at Schweitzer, as Snocross, Hillcross and 2Moto Snowbikes make their racing debut in Sandpoint this weekend.

The Sandpoint Winter Riders are hosting the Mountain West Racing season finale, at the Schweitzer Village on Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

More than 100 riders from around the region are expected to be competing over the weekend, and Jeff York, one of the event’s main promoters, said spectators will not be disappointed by the action.

“They’re going to see a lot of nonstop, exciting action,” said York. “It’s all going on right there where everybody can see it.”

Pro, semi-pro and amateur riders are all welcome to participate. Registration is Friday, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lakeview Lodge, and Saturday, from 8-9 a.m. General admission is $10 on Saturday, $15 on Sunday, or $20 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and under are free.

Snowcross is essentially motocross for snowmobiles, featuring lots of jumping and passing. Hillcross is similar to snowcross, except the racers head up the hill, with the first rider to the flag winning. Snowbikes, which are becoming very popular, are basically dirt bikes fitted with a front ski and a rear track kit, and are ridden like motorcycles.

York said the event promises to be a great weekend of riding, racing and fun.

“Starting Friday you’ll see a lot of people coming to town,” he said.
