Box stores aren't the problem

| April 18, 2009 9:00 PM

So Yarrow Frank doesn’t like the box stores. So what! Wasn’t Harold’s a box store? A big blue, ugly, box store. It perished not because of a bank, it perished because the property it sat on became more valuable than Harold’s itself.

Most of the people I know in Bonner County shop at box and chain stores. They are financially successful people who know the value of the dollar they have. Maybe the reason they have money is because they know the value of chain and box stores.

Don’t mention aesthetics to me. Some of the most run down, decrepit looking buildings in Bonner County are mom and pop sole proprietorships. Maybe Ben Olson and Yarrow should spend a few bucks at a local box store and purchase some paint for these eyesores.

What’s this infatuation with Truby’s and Winter Ridge? I made my first visit to Winter Ridge today. Their inventory was not to my liking and their prices didn’t fit my “bang for my buck” purchasing philosophy.

Why are so few making decisions for the multitudes? Let the market set the pace and demand. If the populace wants’ mom and pop type stores, the market will show that.

I have some sobering news for Yarrow, box stores do support the local economy and will for many years in the future. Yarrow mentioned receiving an education internationally. I doubt if it’s majoring in business at The London School of Economics.
