Scotchman Peak area important to region
My wife and I have enjoyed the peaks, valleys and streams which characterize the natural diversity of the Scotchmans. We have experienced the majesty of Scotchman’s Peak, the tranquility hiking along a forest shaded stream, the wonder viewing mountain goats up close, the peace and serenity crossing snow covered meadows and the fellowship sharing these experiences with friends and family. These wilderness experiences are important to us.
A recent letter in the Bee asked “what will be gained by including the Scotchman Peak area in wilderness?” Simply put, designating the Scotchmans a wilderness area is the best available way to protect and preserve the natural quality of this remarkable area now and for future generations. This designation will prohibit development and mechanized access but does not limit human access. The Wilderness Act does, however, permit the Forest Service to use all means necessary to fight fires in wilderness areas and wilderness areas can be managed for big game animals. In fact, Wilderness for the Scotchmans has recently been endorsed by several Montana based hunter/angler groups.
The Scotchmans is a wonderfully unique area which should be preserved and protected. Designating the Scotchmans wilderness will help to maintain our region’s water quality, preserve quality wildlife habitat and assure that we have a place in the future that is wild. The Scotchmans Peak Wilderness is a place to hike, camp, hunt, fish, pick berries, find solitude and adventure and teach our children to value nature.
