Watson sets meet record with monster shot put

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint High sophomore Freedom Watson won the boys shot put with a meet record 53 feet, 9 inches at the Inland Empire League track and field championships Thursday at Lake City High.

Watson, a sophomore, beat his previous best by seven inches. The previous meet record was 53-7 1/2, set by David Lissy of Sandpoint in 2005.

“I did feel pretty good in the beginning,” Watson said. “I don’t think I was trying too hard (in the discus), I just kinda lost my mojo. Tried to power it out too much. Very disappointed.”

Watson threw the discus 150-3 in a meet last Thursday, a PR by 13 feet. In warmups, with a nice breeze from right to left, he was throwing 160 in warmups.

“I don’t know what was going on … I kinda psyched myself out,” Watson said.

Corey Hoffman of Sandpoint won the high jump at 5-8.
