Lacrosse action heats up in Sandpoint on Saturday

| April 23, 2009 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Once a prep school sport played mostly in the Northeast, lacrosse continues to take hold in Sandpoint — along with much of the West — as three teams are now competing in the burgeoning sport. This Saturday marks a great chance to come out and see the teams in hard-hitting action, while enjoying a yummy barbecue and supporting the athletes.

While still considered a club sport, the high school now fields a boys and girls team, and the middle school has a boys team of 7th and 8th graders, aptly named the Middies.

The Middies competed at the Three Rivers Shootout in the Tri-Cities this past weekend, finishing 2-2 to  bring their overall record on the season to 4-2. The beat Wenatchee 4-2 and Hermiston 9-1 for the wins, and lost a tie-breaker 3-2 to Sammammish (Seattle) and 7-1 to  Northshore (Seattle).

A barbecue and bake sale benefiting the club will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or until the food runs out. Eichardt’s is providing the food and the cost will be $3 for kids under 18, and $5 for adults.
