Wampus Cats serve notice to district opponents

LEWISTON — The Clark Fork tennis team showed it will be a force to be reckoned with come districts, winning 10 matches and losing just four Saturday in Lewiston against Troy, Deary, Grangeville and Culdesac — the teams they’ll compete with at districts.

Head coach Mary Jo Lambert is happy to see her team hitting its stride as the season rolls along.

“Everybody has improved so much,” she said, adding that the weather has been tough. “If we ever get a chance to be outside we’ll be really good.”

First year players Stillman Berkley, Nate Nesbitt, Brocklynn Thornton, Claire McMahon, Celeste Komanec and Tala Fehsel continue to make huge strides, and Lambert said she’s astounded by their rapid improvement.

Amy Gannon and Brittny Yates got some retribution by whipping the very team that beat them last year and kept them from qualifying for state.

“They’re playing the best they’ve ever played,” said Lambert of her senior No. 2 doubles team, which teams with Shaina Gustafson and Chelsea Macumber to give the Cats ample firepower in girls doubles.

The Cats are at Troy today.
