Sommerfield, Story lead Bulldogs at Sandpoint Invite

POST FALLS — How windy was it Wednesday at the Sandpoint Invitational golf tournament at the Links in Post Falls?

Moscow’s Chris Williams claimed medalist honors with a 77, a full 13 strokes higher than the 64 he’d carded at the Links earlier in the year, and one of his putts stopped two inches short of the hole, only to be blown 20 feet back by gusty winds.

Dan Sommerfield shot an 85 to lead Sandpoint, Colton Story carded an 87 and Chris Rhyne a 90, and Bulldogs head coach Mike Keough was pleased with his team’s play under the conditions.

“The conditions were so tough,” said Keough, noting the greens were playing to a 12, which is brutally fast. “The kids were putting and the ball would stop and blow off the green.”

Jesse Webster-Merwin, playing at the No. 2 spot, led the Bulldog girls team with a 98, followed by Sandy Whalen with a 102 and Michelle Stone with a 105.

“It’s a real battle for who wants to be No.1 on the team right now,” said Bulldog girls coach Jim Alsager, who was also impressed with the steady improvement of Charissa Chatburn, who shot 113 from the No. 4 spot.

Both the boys and girls teams are at the Lake City Invitational today at the Coeur d’Alene public golf course.
