Sandpoint takes down Kellogg in doubleheader
SANDPOINT — It took a little while for the Sandpoint softball team to notch its first wins of the season, but when they finally did on Senior Day, they did it with style.
Sophomore starting pitcher Kym DaVault took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, all four Bulldog seniors — Jarae Marienau, Sierra Rodriguez, Nicole Adams and Jessica Tucker — got hits, and Rachel Hammack and Jesse Mead smashed home runs as Sandpoint beat Kellogg 9-2 in the first game of a doubleheader sweep Thursday at Travers Park.
DaVault pounded the strike zone, and with solid defense behind her held Kellogg without a hit until Taylor Huber smacked a triple to start the sixth inning.
“Kym came out strong that first game and gave us what we needed,” said Sandpoint coach Derek Dickinson, who knew his team would come out and try to get the seniors a win. “We were hungry for a win. The defense played well, making all the routine plays and then making a couple great plays.”
Freshman C.J. Semones continues to swing a torrid bat, going 4-4 in the first game, and finishing with six hits, including two triples, as the Bulldogs offense came alive in both games.
Molly Givens threw a five-hitter in the nightcap, once again backed by rock-solid defense, and the Bulldogs (2-16) cruised to a 7-1 win. Sandpoint didn’t make an error in either game, and allowed just six hits on the day.
Huber led the Wildcats with three hits in the second game, including her second triple of the day, and Stewart went the distance on the mound again.
Sandpoint hosts Moscow on Saturday in a 4A North showdown. First pitch is noon at Travers Park.
