Candidates needed to end city's fluoride use

| August 5, 2009 9:00 PM

It was good to finally see our local newspaper cover the topic of the purposeful medication of our city water without the residents’ informed consent and approval. After making sure the mayor and City Council have been given the latest science proving the medical and environmental dangers of water fluoridation, the frustration of local residents is tangible when talking to other area business owners such as myself.

In fact, I sent a letter to Sandpoint City Mayor Gretchen Hellar on June 2, 2009, asking if they would cease medicating the people of Sandpoint with hydrofluorosilicic acid if provided with new and compelling science on the topic. I am still awaiting a response.

Since four City Council positions are up for re-election in November, I want to encourage residents to file at the courthouse this month their intent to run for a council position and use this issue in their campaign platform.

There are more than 900 signatures on an informal petition to put an end to water fluoridation here so it should be an easy win for any person to prevail over the incumbent currently seated on the council. It is long overdue that we have city council members who are willing to act on the will of  the majority of their constituents.
