Donation reopens Bonner Humane Society

SANDPOINT — Just when it looked like the Bonner Humane Society had used up the last of its nine lives, the organization has been rejuvenated by the generosity of a local couple.

The low-cost spay and neuter clinic was forced to close in June after funding dried up. Needing $50,000 to reopen, BHS officials began an ambitious fundraising campaign, which raised several thousand dollars in the first two weeks. Donations slowed, then completely stalled out at approximately $7,000, which forced clinic officials to make the difficult decision to terminate the campaign and throw in the towel.

On the brink of disaster, society officials received a phone call from a local married couple who said they wanted to help. The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, asked for more information about the society’s business model and what it would take to reopen, according to Velta Ashbrook, whoserves as secretary for the society’s board of directors.

A few days later, Ashbrook got word that the couple was willing to write a check for $10,000. Even better, they agreed to donate an additional $1,000 per week until the society got back on track.

Ashbrook met with the board of directors Thursday to confirm the contribution and hammer out details about the reopening.

“It was a pretty happy group that met last night,” she said. “It’s been like a roller coaster. Everyone was so let down and then all of the sudden everyone was really happy.”

The Bonner Humane Society will officially reopen Aug. 24, but will begin taking appointments Aug. 17, Ashbrook said.

New office hours will be Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and the society will also open the first Saturday of each month.

While the influx of money will keep the center afloat through the year, Ashbrook said she is already planning a number of fundraisers to ensure the society’s long-term survival. As always, monetary donations are still being accepted.
