Give a hand to those who are in need
Thank you for publishing “End of an Era: Homeless Advocates Pass Torch”, July 19, 2009, about two of our founders, Cyd Savoy, our outgoing board president; and Jo Johnson one of our Board members. The story of their self-less determination in recognizing the need and starting the Bonner County Homeless Task Force in 1991, now known as T.I.P.S., is one our entire community should recognize, be grateful for and honor. We are very blessed to live in a community where countless individuals give of their time, energy and heart, serving, volunteering and giving to the many non-profits that provide various social services to those in need. Cyd and Jo’s boundless energy, leadership and enthusiasm will be greatly missed by our organization and the entire community as well. We wish them the best of times as they begin to enjoy the next phase of their lives.
I wish to point out, as the incoming board president, that others have “grabbed the torch” and will not only continue those efforts, but expand them as well. Our Blue Haven and Trestle Creek facilities provide transitional housing for families (including 31 children at present) with complete case management that connects them with community resources and build stability. Our Harmony House domestic violence safe house for women and children continues to operate 24/7 with a broad array of case management services in a safe environment for those in crisis. The transitional housing facilities are full with a long waiting list which we anticipate will grow in the coming months as more families are impacted by the current economic crisis and winter approaches.
Finally, I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of those in the community who have given of their time and resources in support of our efforts over the years and the efforts of the other local groups who provide community wide services. As a non-government related non-profit organization, we rely 100 percent on donations and grants. In addition to housing, we assist families with food, clothing, child care, transportation and other needs. We have some exciting and important items on our to-do list which we’ll describe for your readers in more detail in the coming months.
Most of us have much to be grateful for, so please join us in continuing to strengthen our community by giving a hand up to those in need.
