Why weren't warnings given of chemical use?

My family and I spent a few days vacationing in beautiful Sandpoint last week. We had a wonderful time and the kids especially enjoyed swimming at City Beach.
It was a few days later that I learned that herbicides are dumped into the lake to treat invasive milfoil. I am outraged that my family and unborn child were exposed to dangerous chemicals.
There were no signs posted at the beach to inform unsuspecting visitors. If I had known, we would have never entered the water. There must be another way to manage the milfoil without exposing people and the environment to harmful chemicals.
