Sponsors, community made event a success

From the Sandpoint Chapter of Wishing Star a big thank you goes to our sponsors and the community for their support

Our basketball game was a success. Seeing all the children with their parents who made the effort to come to the Harlem Ambassadors game was exactly what our Sandpoint Chapter had envisioned. We wanted to have an event that would be interesting for the kids. The players interacted with the children and gave them something to do. We only wish more kids could have been involved.

On Sunday, Nov. 1, the Harlem Ambassadors came to town. Our hometown heroes, “Glory Daze,” gave them a little competition on the high school gym floor. This event was planned and accomplished by the Sandpoint Chapter of Wishing Star as a fundraiser to help some of our local children receive wishes. One who has been approved is Decker. He will be able to go crab fishing on the Oregon coast with some of the money raised. His trip is in the planning stages and he will be going when it’s convenient for him and his family.

The volunteers from the Sandpoint Chapter would like to thank the following sponsors: Panhandle Shrine Club, Dick Blakley of Bla Bar, Inc., Alliance Title & Escrow, Perfection Tire, Woods Crushing & Hauling, Lakeview Funeral Home, Cliff Irish Trucking, Sandcreek Medical Supply, Lighthouse Foods, Northern Lights and Sandpoint Property Management. Also we could not have taken care of the visiting team if it had not been for La Quinta Inn, which provided rooms for the players; Sandpoint Senior Center, which let us use their facility for the after-game dinner; Lighthouse Foods for salad dressings, Safeway for drinks during the game and after, The Bridge for advertising the game for us and Butch Trosen’s electronic reader board in Sagle. Eric Plummer, sports editor at the Daily Bee, did a super job writing articles letting people know about the game; Trish Gannon, The River Journal had a big article alerting everyone to the event; and Marianne Love put us on her blog with an informative article.

Our hometown team was put together with the help of Jason Wylie and Lance Bruce. Thank goodness they found hardy souls who love to play basketball and were willing to take on the Harlem Ambassadors with all their high jinks. Bob Hayes, Mel Speelman, Eric Plummer, Jake Plummer, Chris Chapburn, Dick Cvitanich, Valerie Wakely, Billy Bopp, Nicole Adams, Jody Corless, Anne Bruce, Mike Roos, Jake Oliver, Travis Mire, Jay Vandenberg, Clint Frank and Ty Olson did a great job as well as our referee, Mick Adams.

Last, but not least, we could not have done this fundraiser without our chapter volunteers. Thank you.
