Jenny's impact felt throughout the year

| December 21, 2009 8:00 PM

The meaning of the term community is realized in Sandpoint in many ways. I’ve been touched by the generosity and the inspired vision of “Celebrate Life”.  As a nurse at BGH’s out patient clinic, I am positioned to see some of the help that Celebrate Life has given “those in the community who are affected by cancer”.

The inception of this charity was inspired by Jenny Meyer, a young, vibrant woman. As she fought her cancer battle, Jenny taught all that knew her some profound lessons on living life well. The work of Celebrate Life is carried on by Jenny’s sister, Julie Walkington and their friend January Tuinstra. Their fundraiser is the annual Long Bridge Fun Run/Walk that takes place every August.

Jenny’s wish was to assist folks fighting this battle without requiring anything of them. Cancer patients and families maintain demanding schedules of appointments and fill out far too many forms. She wanted the help to be a gift that would not require an assessment of need or even a signature. The diagnosis is the only qualifier. Community support is the point. Julie and January have honored this wish and are vigilant to spread the gifts to our neighbors on the cancer path. Gifts can be tailored to a persons needs and include massages, gas and grocery vouchers, wood for heating, gift cards to many local businesses and cash.

Celebrate Life is not, of course, Jenny’s only legacy. Her husband, Jeff and daughter, Grace remain in our area, are busy, and living well. They enjoy the loving support of family, and friends, especially Jenny’s parents, Cari and Roy Jacobson. As a teacher at SHS, Jenny touched the lives of many students, who respected her greatly, including my own daughter.

Thank you to Julie, January, local business donors and fun run/walk participants. Know that your gift is being paid forward week in and week out. Call Celebrate Life at (208) 263-6790 for information.
