CdA defeats Bulldog wrestlers

| February 3, 2009 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT - Coeur d'Alene's Andrew Palmer avenged an early season loss to Sandpoint's Garret Belgarde, registering a first period pin to help lead Coeur d'Alene, the No. 4 ranked duals team in the state, to a 64-12 win Tuesday night at Sandpoint Middle School.

The featured match was at 103 pounds, where the top two ranked wrestlers in the state met for the second time this season. Belgarde beat Palmer in the Tri-State final earlier in the year, but Palmer said he's been on a roll lately and wrestling better.

"The first time I was kind of defensive; this time it was attack, attack, attack," said Palmer of their first meeting, before being asked if they are the two best wrestlers in the state for their weight. "Definitely. He (Belgarde) is a tough kid."

Sid Winter (140) and Jacob Porter (119) each registered quick pins to lead Sandpoint - which had three forfeits - to its only points on the night. Winter was nearly pinned twice in a frenetic first minute of his win over Christian Putman, before escaping and winning the match.

Sandpoint is at Lakeland next Wednesday.
