Humane Society trims hours, staff

SANDPOINT - The Bonner Humane Society, a local non-profit dedicated to reducing the population of unwanted pets in the community by operating a low-cost spay-and-neuter clinic, has announced it is reducing clinic hours and laying off one employees.

The cuts are due to financial reasons, the society said in a press release.

Diane Newcomer, chairman of the humane society's board of directors, said there are several factors contributing to the decrease in income that makes the changes necessary. Among them are the fact that clients are canceling appointments because they have lost their jobs.

In an emergency meeting on Jan. 24, the board voted to reduce the clinic's hours of operation rather than raise prices, Newcomer said.

Bonner Humane Society has been operating the low-cost clinic in the Sandpoint area for about 20 years.

Currently, the board is looking for a few new members, preferably energetic folks with time available to help with planning, fundraising and other activities and programs. Experience with running a successful business would be a great help, Newcomer said.

The new hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
