Lakeland downs Sandpoint in district opener

| February 3, 2009 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT - Camille Reynolds had 12 points, four steals and three assists, and Lakeland simply had too much depth and experience, downing Sandpoint 48-31 Tuesday night in the 4A Region 1 tournament opener at Les Rogers Court.

Kari Rucker scored eight, Emily Stecker had four points and five steals, and Kristyn App grabbed five rebounds as the Hawks (13-5) were never seriously threatened after jumping out to a 14-6 first quarter lead.

"It was ragged at times," said coach Steve Seymour, whose team now heads to Moscow on Thursday. "Typical first round of a district tournament."

Freshman Mackenzie Jones had her best game of the season, scoring six points to go with six rebounds, and Charissa Chatburn hit two 3-pointers to lead the Bulldogs (2-19) in defeat. Natasha Roop grabbed nine rebounds, and head coach Lance Bruce had high praise for the defense of freshman Alex Bucholtz, who held Reynolds to just 12 after the Hawks' leading scorer had hit for 37 against Lake City.

Sandpoint will play the loser of Thursday's game on Saturday. If Moscow wins, the Bulldogs host Lakeland, and if Lakeland wins, the Bulldogs travel to Moscow.
