Support our kids with a 'yes' vote

| February 9, 2009 8:00 PM

On Feb. 24, the voters will be asked to vote on the “replacement” supplemental levy for our Lake Pend Oreille School District. While we all know that everyone is trying to do more with less in these difficult economic times, it is critical that the education of children in our local communities be maintained. The school district has made significant cuts and trimmed as much as they realistically can to reach the levy amount being placed on the ballot.

Please consider the disastrous effect a “no” vote would have for our students and our community — the major additional cuts in staffing (including teachers), the elimination of extracurricular activities, the elimination of student access to new computer technologies and the reduction in curriculum offerings.

This would all come at a time when the increasingly global economy demands that our young people receive an education that prepares them to be competitive in a world market. In addition, the economic welfare of our local businesses and our entire region depends on a strong education system.

I encourage you to vote “yes” on Feb. 24.
