Levy's failure would definitely hurt students

| February 13, 2009 8:00 PM

Would the levy really affect the student’s education? Most definitely.

As a sophomore at Sandpoint High School, I am one of the students who benefits greatly from the programs funded by what is erroneously named a “supplemental levy”. Academic Decathlon, band, and Math Club … these are just a few of the wonderful programs offered at SHS that allow me to receive an education that gives me a hope of attending college.

Everything about school that I value will be gone if this levy fails. What some people call “excess fat” is the staple of my education.

I have learned more life skills and gained more knowledge in Academic Decathlon than in any other class offered at the high school. The bands have given me both a creative outlet and opportunity to learn teamwork.

Other programs such as athletics, drama, newspaper, and yearbook have similar positive effects on students of all types and allow students to find their niche and receive a true education. Without the money provided by the levy, these opportunities for students will cease to exist. School will become nothing more than a state requirement.
