A 'yes' vote equals an informed decision

| February 18, 2009 8:00 PM

A yes vote is an easy decision on Feb. 24 if a responsible voter knows the facts and the ramifications of this vote. Local property owners are burdened with the responsibility to fund education, this includes plant facility and supplemental levies that the majority of all Idaho school districts utilize (locally the supplemental levy represents 21 percent for staff budget and all extra-curricular activities; academic and athletic). This levy merely replaces the expiring levy and funds valuable programs that educate future leaders of our economy (passing this levy actually reduces staff and programs in LPOSD). Property taxes will not increase in year one and will decrease 45 percent in year two.

Levy failure will result in the elimination of all academic and athletic activities. Consider the affects on our children as they seek quality activities to participate in and likewise consider the social ramifications of no academic or athletic activities. I’m concerned to think how this will affect attendance, graduation rates, and increased juvenile delinquency.

Clearly our local and national economy is struggling. Local business owners/managers please consider the dramatic effect of losing 100 quality jobs (paychecks) from our local economy. The current economic downturn should not cause this generation of students to pay in the form of increased class sizes, inadequate technology, no upper quartile classes, and quite simply an education that will not position them to compete for college placement/scholarships and quality jobs.

Feb. 24 please do the right and responsible thing. Vote yes.
