District needs to make do with less
The schools are standing with their hands out again. This time it’s for $10.9 million. Did anyone notice homeowners are in crisis, too? We are all learning to cut costs just to survive, yet the schools seem to think they can come running to us anytime they need a cash refill.
We all support the schools — just reassure us that you’ve tried everything to reduce expenses. Bonners Ferry cut its budget by 20 percent going to a four-day week. What a savings. Not running the buses or heating the buildings etc. can really add up. Why can’t we try that here?
Teachers will still have full time and therefore not the first target of budget cuts. Oh sure, there are some parents who object because they think of the schools as a babysitter at taxpayers’ expense.
Perhaps the schools could seek parent volunteers to perform certain tasks? I think most parents want what is best for their kids and will step up to the plate when asked.
How about an extra .05 percent sales tax that spreads the tax among everyone, not just saddling the property owners. This seems more fair, doesn’t it.
There are hundreds of homeowners who feel as I do — so vote no on Feb. 24.
