Shooting Stars at Schweitzer

SANDPOINT — While they may not be superstars, they certainly are super-Starlight Racers with their repetitive wins. Matt Gillis continues to go undefeated as the fastest overall skier for the third week in a row, in just 19.97 seconds, and team “Rusty Springs” remained in first place.

The fastest Female was Debra Rawuka at 24.08 seconds, while Dave Sanborn took the top spot for snowboarding at 26.49 seconds. The top Telemark skier was Clint Parrish with a time of 25.21 seconds.

The combination of fast snow and a fast course made this the most challenging run of the series. It was also the turniest, which skiers and boarders discovered at gate three of the yellow course. This particularly cantankerous turn proved to be an obstinate obstacle for the racers.

Sean Briggs, a member of team “Just Skiddin,” was one of the victims of the toilsome turn on his second run.

“It’s no wonder my nickname is ‘Crash’ after that run,” he said, as he removed the snow from his face. “That was a crazy course, but it’s awesome that they change and present a different challenge every week.”

Friday’s results were announced at Taps during the post-race party where, oddly enough, Thor Seaborg, a skier, won the Nintendo Wii snowboard challenge.

The Starlight Race Series will continue for the next two weeks. On the final night, March 6, Taps will host a special after party with the theme “A night at the movies.” The party is open to everyone 21 and over, and starts at 6 p.m.
