Investment in students looks like a sure bet

| January 7, 2009 8:00 PM

To voters in the Lake Pend Oreille School District:

You have read and no doubt will be reading lots more from good people who are writing to the editor to say they don't support the upcoming supplemental levy because times are hard.

Indeed, they are.

All the more reason to focus squarely on the things that are of utmost importance to our families and our community. When I go through that personal inventory, I keep landing on the future of our children and the quality of their education.

For that reason, I have done my homework and now plan to vote yes. Before you take the word of well-meaning citizens on either side of this important debate, please take a moment to get some first-hand information on your own. Our school district can be contacted at 263-2184. Call and ask for details about the proposed supplemental levy, look them over and come to your own conclusion. An informed decision is always more productive than a knee-jerk reaction.

It may be risky to throw money at the stock market these days, but continuing to invest in the strong improvement that's going on in our schools looks like a sure bet to me.
