Lions: Thank you for successful Toys For Tots effort

When times are tough, the tough get going. That is exactly what this community did to make the 2008 "Toys For Tots" drive work for the many who needed a lift at Christmas. The goal of $50,000 was nearly reached, and the Lions were able to provide toys for 724 children up to age 12, $9,000 in gift certificates for 13 to 16 year olds, and more than 500 food boxes for a great family holiday meal.

The list of those who deserve thanks for "Toys For Tots" success is long and diverse. Space will not allow recognition of everyone, but The Sandpoint Lions want to highlight a cross section of our fabulous helpers. First we must note the role of the schools. The National Honor Society at Sandpoint High School fundraisers, toy donations, and help with distribution were fantastic. Other schools also contributed to the fund drive including Kootenai, Hope, Washington and Northside elementary schools.

At the very top of those who supported the "Toys For Tots" drive was everyone who donated to the fund drive. Donations ranged from kid's piggy banks to our major donors. We must recognize the generosity of Coldwater Creek for the firm's help and cash donation. A major donation came from the Ambrosianai Pastore Foundation. Businesses, service clubs, and private citizens (including anonymous) all did their part. Many firms provided space for Lion collection jars.

Citing just a few of the helpers, Nu Way Storage provided a drop off point for toys and donations. North Idaho Spas again came through with a hot tub of toys. Don Thomas of Selkirk Glass and Cabinets and Sandpoint Furniture's Design Team helped the effort tremendously. Ron and Patty Lowrey donated two storage sheds for toys.

We must recognize the role the local media played in getting the news out on our needs and progress. Marlisa Keyes' series on "Toys For Tots" in the Bonner County Daily Bee was the prime source for drive information. She also played an important role in collecting funds from various sites. Blue Sky Broadcasting, The River Journal, and Sandpoint Newsline were also in support of the effort.

The Lions want to close our thank you to a caring community by recognizing two Lions who personified the attitude necessary to make "Toys For Tots" a reality. They are Lion Della Kenworthy, who again kept the Toy Room an efficient operation, and Lion Tom Sutton whose attitude of helpfulness even made working in our cold garage seem pleasant.

To the many not listed, thank you and your contribution was appreciated. Now it is time to get ready for next year. We have already been to Wal-Mart and they were very helpful in getting the toy room restocked. Oh yes, the Easter Egg hunt is coming, too!
