Don't put Green Owl site in Peninsula Road area

| January 12, 2009 8:00 PM

Did anyone notice how glibly Commissioner Joe Young dismissed our concerns about moving the “Green Owl” dump site to our neighborhood in the 1200 block of Peninsula Road?

With a patronizing “pat on the head,” he assures us that we will “have a chance to be heard” — as if that would soothe our fears and make everything all right.

Everything about this scheme reeks of being a “done deal,” starting with the quiet purchase of the land, the sneaky planning with no public oversight, and now “the defense” begins, where Commissioner Young calmly repeats his talking points and yawns …

So let’s see; the county buys the land, just days after the election so they can’t be held accountable by the voters.

Then they send themselves an application for a conditional use permit.

Then they make a pretense of public hearings and other lip service, to protect themselves politically — and then since they are the final authority which grants the permits, they do so, and the deal is done.

The only appeals available are based on “technical and legal errors,” which they are unlikely to make.

So, like the fox guarding the henhouse, the commissioners get what they want, at our expense. Is this what we elected them for? To cleverly exploit us, like a fox?

Please help us preserve our quality of life, public health, public safety, and property values, by calling or writing the Bonner County Commissioners’ Office, and urge them not to move the “Green Owl” dump site to our neighborhood:
