Base vote on financial situation of self, others

| January 17, 2009 8:00 PM

Lake Pend Oreille School District Superintendent Dick Cvitanich tried recruiting me to write a letter to the Bee in support of the upcoming levy and I did honestly consider his positions with an open mind.

However, after the shocking news (yeah, right), that the Republican-controlled state government will raise taxes and fees, the gas tax and car registration, and continue cutting services while we continue paying income and property taxes at the same level? Now we're being asked to pass this $11 million levy to help make up for these cuts?

Even if it is necessary, at least for the duration of the current economic downturn, most of us are cutting out all but the basics. Well, the schools can just get back to the basics also, just teaching our ever-shrinking student body.

Sports and many other frills are not necessary, especially at this time.  After all, I have a 6 1/2 year old computer whose hard drive is failing, but I will be lucky to afford a new one this year. I don't need to pay for replacements to school machines that may be a year or two old. Also, with enrollment continuing to decline, that takes care of reducing class sizes. Consider your own financial situation and vote what not only is best for us all, but yourself.
