District needs to adapt to economic conditions

| January 21, 2009 8:00 PM

Having closely followed the school district for many years, I have to say the current school board, superintendent and treasurer have done more to instill public trust with transparency than anyone or anytime in the past, and I very much appreciate that. I'm also sure they want the very best for each student in our district. However that is not always possible.

With the plant facilities levy last year, taxpayers have approved $40,519,000 (yes, that's $40 million) in the last ten years. With the economy the way it is, and no real prospect for a turn for the better in the next year or two, the district should adapt to the economic conditions, like the taxpayers must do.

We have operated without a supplemental levy in the past, and we can do so again if we have to. I have to say - not this time.
