SANDPOINT - An outreach coordinator is being sought to help waterfront landowners take an active roll in protecting water quality in Bonner County.

The Lakeshore Assessment System, also known as Lake*A*Syst, offers practical advice to shoreline and near-shore landowners in curbing the amount of stormwater and nutrient pollution entering the Pend Oreille and Priest Lake.

The person selected for the post will be responsible for the continued implementation of Lake*A*Syst on the Pend Oreille and furthering the development of a program in the Priest Lake watershed.

The Bonner Soil & Water Conservation District, which helps guide and coordinate Lake*A*Syst, is looking for applicants with knowledge of water quality-related best management practices and resource management.

"It doesn't necessarily have to be received in a formal educational setting, but as long they have knowledge of land-use practices and how they relate to water quality," Jamie Davis, a water quality resource conservationist with the Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts.

The program started in 2005 and it provides guidance to landowners on land-use practices which guard water quality, such as the use of native plants for landscaping materials. The program was established by Gary Parker, who passed away last year.

Ideal candidates must be comfortable dealing with the public through one-on-one interaction, in addition to community meetings and presentations. An outgoing disposition and strong organizational and time-management skills are necessary for the job.

Along with maintaining the program for the Pend Oreille, the outreach coordinator would help it become established at Priest Lake. Davis said the Priest Lake program would be tailored to fit that unique area's attributes.

"There's more forestry practices that would be applicable because there's not quite as many urbanized areas, so the stormwater issues would be more forestry-related," Davis said.
